For the Mashed Potatoes
- 4–5 russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 2 tbsp butter
- ½ cup milk (more if needed)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Ground Beef & Gravy
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional but recommended)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 ½ cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp black pepper
- Salt, to taste
- Optional: ½ tsp paprika or thyme
🧑🍳 FULL RECIPE
1. Make the Mashed Potatoes
- Place cubed potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water.
- Add ½ tsp salt to the water.
- Bring to a boil and cook 10–12 minutes or until fork-tender.
- Drain and return potatoes to the pot.
- Add butter + milk, and mash until smooth and creamy.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add extra milk if they need thinning.
2. Cook the Ground Beef
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned.
- Add the chopped onion (and garlic if using).
- Cook 3–4 minutes more, until onions are softened.
- Drain excess grease, if needed.
3. Make the Gravy
- Push the beef to one side of the skillet.
- Add 2 tbsp butter to the empty side.
- Once melted, sprinkle in 2 tbsp flour and whisk to make a roux.
- Cook the flour mixture for 1 minute.
- Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly.
- Mix everything together into a smooth gravy.
- Add Worcestershire, pepper, and salt (adjust carefully).
- Simmer on low 3–5 minutes until thickened.
4. Serve
Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.
Top with savory beef gravy.
