🍅 World’s Best Fried Green Tomatoes
Ingredients
- 4 large green tomatoes
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornmeal
- ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional but makes them extra crispy)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
1. Slice the Tomatoes
- Slice green tomatoes into ¼-inch to ½-inch thick rounds.
- Lightly sprinkle both sides with salt and let sit for 5 minutes to draw out moisture.
- Pat dry with paper towels.
2. Prepare the Breading Stations
Set up three shallow bowls:
- Bowl 1: Flour, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder/paprika
- Bowl 2: Whisk together eggs and milk
- Bowl 3: Mix cornmeal and breadcrumbs (or use 100% cornmeal if preferred)
3. Bread the Tomatoes
For each slice:
- Dredge in the flour mixture (shake off excess).
- Dip into the egg mixture.
- Press into cornmeal/breadcrumb mixture until well coated.
4. Fry
- Heat ¼–½ inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium to medium-high heat.
- When the oil is hot (a pinch of cornmeal should sizzle instantly), carefully add tomato slices in a single layer.
- Fry 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Transfer to paper towels to drain.
5. Serve
Best served hot with:
- Ranch
- Comeback sauce
- Remoulade
- Hot sauce
- Or simply a sprinkle of salt

- Use green, firm tomatoes—no ripeness!
- Double dip in egg and cornmeal for a thicker crust.
