- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- ¼ cup warm water
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
For the Filling (optional suggestions):
Choose one or mix and match based on your taste!
- Cheese (shredded mozzarella, cheddar, or cream cheese)
- Spiced ground beef or chicken
- Mashed potatoes with herbs
- Spinach and feta
- Cooked vegetables or mushrooms
- Sweet filling (e.g., Nutella, jam, sweetened cream cheese)
For Brushing:
- 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk (egg wash)
- Optional: sesame seeds, nigella seeds, or dried herbs for topping
Instructions
- Activate the yeast (if needed):
If using active dry yeast instead of instant, mix it with the warm water and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. (Skip this step for instant yeast.) - Make the dough:
In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix to combine.
Add warm milk, warm water, egg, and butter. Mix and knead for 8–10 minutes until a soft, smooth, and elastic dough forms. Add a bit more flour if too sticky. - First rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. - Shape the rolls:
Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces (about 12–16 rolls). Flatten each piece slightly, place about 1 tablespoon of your filling in the center, and pinch the edges to seal tightly. Roll into a smooth ball. - Second rise:
Place the rolls seam-side down on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy. - Bake:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with seeds if desired.
Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until golden brown on top and baked through. - Cool slightly & enjoy!
Let the rolls cool for a few minutes before serving. Best enjoyed warm!
Tips for Success
- Make sure liquids are warm, not hot (about 100–110°F / 38–43°C) to avoid killing the yeast.
- For extra softness, brush hot rolls with melted butter after baking.
- Use strong bread flour if you want extra chewy texture.
- You can freeze baked rolls and reheat as needed.
