Southern-Style Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 works best)
¼ cup bread crumbs
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 egg
¼ cup milk
2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons flour
2 cups beef broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
Make the patties
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, egg, and milk.
Mix gently (don’t overwork).
Shape
Form into oval or round patties, about ¾-inch thick.
Brown the steaks
Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
Remove patties and set aside.
Cook the onions
In the same skillet, add sliced onions.
Cook until soft and golden, scraping up the browned bits.
Make the gravy
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly add beef broth while stirring.
Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
Simmer
Return hamburger steaks to the skillet.
Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer 15–20 minutes until tender and cooked through.
